During the Gaudeamus Muziekweek, the New European Ensemble and The Hague Vocal Ensemble, conducted by Angeliki Ploka, present a program centered around De Leeuw&#8217;s conception of music as a ritual act.<\/p>\n<p data-path-to-node=\"3\"><b data-path-to-node=\"3\" data-index-in-node=\"0\">Midare<\/b>, written for the Japanese marimba player Michiko Takahashi, is a virtuoso exploration of the instrument. The title (\u2018free\u2019, \u2018unorthodox\u2019) refers to the open structure of the work, in which divergent playing techniques converge and the boundaries of what is executable are pushed to their limits.<\/p>\n<p data-path-to-node=\"4\">In <b data-path-to-node=\"4\" data-index-in-node=\"3\">Invocations<\/b>, the relationship between text, sound, and meaning takes center stage. The Latin texts are primarily drawn from the Psalms and the <i data-path-to-node=\"4\" data-index-in-node=\"146\">Missa pro defunctis<\/i>, structuring the work from the <i data-path-to-node=\"4\" data-index-in-node=\"197\">De profundis clamavi ad te<\/i>, via the <i data-path-to-node=\"4\" data-index-in-node=\"233\">Libera me, Domine<\/i>, to later invocations such as <i data-path-to-node=\"4\" data-index-in-node=\"281\">Miserere mei<\/i>. An instrumental interlude forms a turning point, after which the Gregorian melody is introduced and further developed, featuring a prominent role for both the choir and the solo voice. The title and lyrics are drawn from William Carlos Williams, whose words Reich brought together into one vast, breathing soundscape, based on Williams&#8217; collection <i>The Desert Music and Other Poems<\/i>.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">There is, however, more hidden behind that landscape: Reich deliberately chose texts from Williams\u2019 post-Hiroshima and Nagasaki period, a time when \u2018the bomb\u2019 hung like a shadow over the world. The Hague School emerged around the Royal Conservatoire<span class=\"punct-spaced\">:<\/span>\u00a0composers who rebelled against the established music scene with its red velvet and sedate orchestras. They wrote unconventional music with a strong rhythmic drive, inspired by Stravinsky and American minimal music \u2014 and thereby attracted worldwide attention. Young composers travelled to The Hague from all corners of the globe, including Calliope Tsoupaki from Greece. She studied under Louis Andriessen and took classes in electronic music with Gilius van Bergeijk<span class=\"punct-spaced\">;<\/span>\u00a0she now teaches composition at the conservatoire herself. The pupil has become the teacher. As guest curator, she has selected three favourite pieces by the composers who have shaped her.<\/p>\n<p>Louis Andriessen based his\u00a0<em>Symphony for Loose Strings<\/em>\u00a0(1978) on a brilliant idea<span class=\"punct-spaced\">:<\/span>\u00a0twelve string players play exclusively on loose strings, each tuned differently. No one can play a melody on their own. Each sequence of consecutive notes must travel from musician to musician. You can see and hear the music leaping from music stand to music stand. This relay technique is called \u2018hoketus\u2019 and flourished in the fourteenth century, the era of the medieval Ars Nova<span class=\"punct-spaced\">:<\/span>\u00a0the festival\u2019s theme.<\/p>\n<p>Diderik Wagenaar drew inspiration from Stravinsky, but just as much from his jazz heroes Thelonious Monk and John Coltrane. In\u00a0<em>Cat Music<\/em>\u00a0(1994), he portrays two cats in three pieces for two violins<span class=\"punct-spaced\">:<\/span>\u00a0in\u00a0<em>Playing<\/em>, a playful melody constantly shifts in character<span class=\"punct-spaced\">;<\/span>\u00a0in\u00a0<em>Hunting<\/em>, the violins chase one another in a stream of notes that never pauses for a moment<span class=\"punct-spaced\">;<\/span>\u00a0and in\u00a0<em>Purring<\/em>, the two voices merge into a single contented, purring melody.<\/p>\n<p>Gilius van Bergeijk is a pioneer of Dutch electronic music. His compositions make use of sparse sonic material and silences, turning silence itself into the subject of the music. Throughout her long career, she developed a musical language entirely her own, where spirituality and sonic exploration come together in service of emotional power.<\/p>\n<p data-path-to-node=\"5\">At the heart of the program are two works from different phases of her oeuvre. In <i data-path-to-node=\"5\" data-index-in-node=\"82\">Hommage \u00e0 T.S. Eliot<\/i> for soprano and ensemble, Gubaidulina responds to the poetic world of Eliot\u2019s <i data-path-to-node=\"5\" data-index-in-node=\"181\">Four Quartets, <\/i>a text she described as &#8220;an effortless bridge to music.&#8221; The work demonstrates how literature and music complement each other in exploring time, memory, and meaning.<\/p>\n<p data-path-to-node=\"6\">The second work is <i data-path-to-node=\"6\" data-index-in-node=\"19\">Repentance<\/i>, written for cello, double bass, and three guitars. Here, Gubaidulina explores the rich sonic possibilities of this unusual instrumentation, featuring two of her favorite instruments, guitar and double bass, in the leading roles. In doing so, she creates driving gestures in which the three guitars bring forth a surprisingly orchestral sound.<\/p>\n<p data-path-to-node=\"7\">Set between these two pieces is the world premiere of a new work by American composer Michael Hersch, commissioned by the New European Ensemble for oboist Christopher Bouwman. Although Hersch has developed a musical voice entirely his own, he shares Gubaidulina\u2019s fascination with dark, mysterious sounds and with music as a vessel for existential questions.
