The New European Ensemble presents Als ik Luister as part of the\u00a0Dwarsliggers<\/em>\u00a0concert series. A unique fusion of music and storytelling, featuring composers and thinkers who dare to go against the grain.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Psychiatrist, author, and activist Glenn Helberg takes the audience on a journey through the worlds of Julius Eastman, Jalalu-Kalvert Nelson, and Derrick Skye. Helberg connects the motivations and aspirations of these composers to the experiences of people of color in a predominantly white society. He does so through personal stories and insights from his book\u00a0Als ik luister<\/em>\u00a0(2023).<\/p>\n\n\n\n

A remarkable evening of music and literature<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Het werk van Julius Eastman (1940-1990) is doordrenkt van minimalistische, repetitieve motieven en roept de rusteloosheid en ontheemding op van een zwarte, homoseksuele componist in een vijandige wereld. Het ensemble speelt zijn krachtig geladen compositie Gay Guerrilla<\/em>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Jalalu-Kalvert Nelson (*1951) reflects on the history of racism in the U.S. in\u00a0Jim is Still Crowing,<\/em>\u00a0featuring a prominent role for his trumpet.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Derrick Skye (*1982), a composer with roots in Ghana, Nigeria, the UK, and Ireland, explores the blending of cultures in American society in\u00a0American Mirror<\/em>. In this piece, even the audience plays an active role.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

As host Glenn Helberg weaves together a narrative of intergenerational transmission, identity, and the importance of understanding and respect between cultures.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
