With Phaedra in Flames<\/em>, the New European Ensemble<\/strong> has opened the new season in striking fashion. Directed by Ola Mafaalani<\/strong> and written by Nino Haratischwili<\/strong>, the production was met with wide acclaim from both critics and audiences last week.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In its review, Trouw<\/strong> praised the performance as \u201ca warning against the lust for power and populism\u201d<\/em> \u2013 a timely and compelling statement that lends new weight to the classical tragedy of Phaedra. Both de Volkskrant<\/strong> and NRC<\/strong> awarded the production four stars<\/strong>, commending the intensity of the performances and the seamless interplay between music and theatre.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Theaterkrant<\/strong> and 8Weekly<\/strong> also noted how Mafaalani and Haratischwili expose the ways in which women continue to navigate a world still shaped by male power. The ensemble\u2019s music acts as the heartbeat of that struggle \u2014 at times whispering, at times blazing, but always inescapably present.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Phaedra in Flames<\/em> is a co-production of Het Nationale Theater<\/strong> and the New European Ensemble<\/strong>, and will tour theatres across the Netherlands in the coming months.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
