‘Phaedra in vlammen’ chosen for the Official Jury Selection of the Dutch Theater Festival!
Great news! The production Phaedra in vlammen, a co-production by Het Nationale Theater and the New European Ensemble, has been selected by the Dutch Theater Jury as one of the ten ‘most impressive’ productions of the past theater season. As part of this Official Jury Selection, the production will be performed again this September at the Dutch Theater Festival (Nederlands Theater Festival).
Phaedra in vlammen is a modern, raw, and poetic version of the classic love drama, written by Nino Haratischwili and directed by Ola Mafaalani. The roles of Phaedra and her lover Persea are performed by Malou Gorter and Yela de Koning, respectively.
The live music forms an essential part of this special production. Composer Krists Auznieks wrote new music specifically for the performance, which is executed live by four musicians (viola, cello, harp, and violin) from the New European Ensemble.
In its jury report, the Dutch Theater Jury highly praised the production and the music:
“In Phaedra in vlammen, existing role patterns are challenged, and ideas about love, family, gender, politics, religion, and culture are put to the test. The impressive stage visuals merge beautifully with the brilliantly performed compositions. It is precisely the abundance and raw energy that make it a performance that resonates for a long time to come.”
As the New European Ensemble, we are incredibly proud of this nomination and selection for the Dutch Theater Festival. It is a fantastic recognition for this special co-production and all the makers who contributed to it!
Keep an eye on our agenda for the exact performance dates during the festival in September.
