Carte Blanche for Heinz Holliger (2019)

New Notes, about this concert.

A bull’s-eye, this concert. The New European Ensemble once again shows that it has grown into one of the best ensembles in the Netherlands, and seeing Holliger conduct and perform is a gift in itself. It’s also good that we get to hear some of this man’s compositions — that happens far too rarely in the Netherlands.

An experience that brought new insights to both the audience and the musicians.

Carte Blanche for Heinz Holliger.
One of the highlights of the year was the collaboration with the impressive and world-renowned 80-year-old composer, conductor, and oboist Heinz Holliger, with concerts in Utrecht, Arnhem, and The Hague. Holliger conducted his own works and both conducted and performed as a soloist in pieces by important composer friends, including György Ligeti, Witold Lutosławski, and Elliott Carter. Working with Holliger was a learning experience for the ensemble. His vast knowledge of 20th-century music, instrumental technique, and his impeccable ear provided new insights and experiences for both the musicians and the audience.
