Symphonic Cinema

Listen and Watch item: 1984

The New European Ensemble presents the film 1984. The film is based on the novel of the same name by George Orwell. Estonian composer Mihkel Kerem wrote a new ensemble work inspired by the novel, performed by the New European Ensemble in the film. Commissioned by the New European Ensemble, filmmaker Gijs Besseling created a feature film featuring the ensemble, in which Kerem’s composition is combined with readings from Orwell’s novel, performed by Boris van der Ham, with commentary by Edward Snowden. Musicians of the ensemble portray the story in powerful cinematic scenes. Recorded in 2020.

Strange news

Premiere November 2021. For this project, the ensemble collaborated with the International Criminal Court (ICC) to highlight connections between the piece and the work of the court — particularly timely in light of the recent case against Ugandan warlord Dominic Ongwen. Strange News is a moving interdisciplinary work focusing on the lives and fates of child soldiers in our time. Ugandan actor Arthur Kisenyi tells the story of a young child soldier, what he experiences, and his eventual return to a peaceful society. This story is illuminated with poignant and multifaceted music by Norwegian composer Rolf Wallin. Film images illustrate the African context of the story. Alongside Strange News, NEuE presents a new work by The Hague-based composer Florentijn Boddendijk, inspired by the importance of international criminal law.
